AI for Class 2: what CBSE teaches
The short answer
There is no AI syllabus in Class 2 either. CBSE's framework begins in Class 3. A Class 2 child can already practise the habits it builds on: finding patterns in shapes and numbers, sorting by two features at once, and giving clear step-by-step instructions.
What this stage looks like
- Not part of the CBSE framework, which begins at Class 3.
- Useful practice: "what comes next?" pattern puzzles, sorting objects by colour and size together, simple maze or grid directions.
- Asking "what would the machine need to be told?" is the first step of thinking like a programmer.
Is it compulsory?
No. There is no AI or computational thinking requirement in Class 2.
One-minute lessons that explain it
Try at home
- Play "robot says": give your child four steps to follow exactly, then swap roles. Giving exact steps is what a program does.
- Ask: does the talking speaker know things the way you do? Let them guess, then explain that it learned from a very large number of examples.

Common questions
- Is coding needed in Class 2?
- No. Unplugged play such as sequencing, patterns and following instructions is enough at this age.
- What comes after Class 2?
- In Class 3 the CBSE framework begins with computational thinking: patterns, breaking problems into clues, and step-by-step rules.
