AI for Class 6: what CBSE teaches
The short answer
Class 6 is where AI literacy begins in CBSE. The 2026-27 framework gives 100 hours a year: 40 of advanced computational thinking, 20 of introductory AI and 40 of interdisciplinary projects. The AI units cover what AI is, basic data, patterns and decisions, and ethics and digital safety.
The four AI units in Class 6 (5 hours each)
- Introduction to AI and everyday examples: what AI is, AI versus automation, human versus machine intelligence, and supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning.
- Basic data concepts: data types (numbers, text, images, sound) and organising data in tables or charts.
- Simple pattern recognition and decision making: spotting patterns in data or daily routines and deciding from observations.
- Ethics and digital responsibility: online safety, passwords, privacy and digital footprints.
Is it compulsory?
The CT and AI framework applies to Classes 3-8 from 2026-27. In Classes 6-8 it is delivered through worksheets and projects across subjects, with assessment by project presentations, assignments and reflective journals. Schools differ in how they run it, so ask yours.
One-minute lessons that explain it
Try at home
- Ask: is a washing machine AI or just automation? (It follows fixed steps, so automation.) Then find one thing in the house that learns from data.
- Make a small tally table of the family's favourite snacks and read the pattern. That is data organisation.

Common questions
- How much AI is taught in Class 6?
- Twenty hours a year of introductory AI, in four units of five hours each, as part of a 100-hour computational thinking and AI plan.
- What is the difference between AI and automation?
- Automation follows fixed rules written by people. AI learns patterns from data to make its own predictions or decisions.
