Class 9 AI Unit 3: Math for AI (Statistics & Probability)
12 theory hours · 13 practical hours · 7 theory marks
What this unit is about
AI finds patterns in numbers and images, and maths is how it does that. The unit shows where statistics, linear algebra, probability and calculus are used in AI, then focuses on statistics in real life (disaster management, sports, disease prediction, weather) and probability: calculating it and recognising types of events.

What the unit covers
- Why AI needs maths: finding patterns in numbers and pictures.
- Statistics: definition and real-life uses; a data-collection activity (car spotting and tabulating).
- Probability: how to calculate it, and types of events.
- Probability in sports, weather forecasting and traffic estimation.
Key terms
- Probability
- Favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes; always between 0 and 1.
- Sure event
- An event that always happens; probability 1.
- Impossible event
- An event that can never happen; probability 0.
- Equally likely events
- Outcomes with the same chance, such as heads or tails on a fair coin.
Exam-style questions
1. What is the probability of getting an even number on a fair die?
Show answer →
3 favourable outcomes (2, 4, 6) out of 6, so 3/6 = 1/2.
2. Give one use of statistics in disaster management.
Show answer →
Analysing past rainfall and river-level data to predict which areas are likely to flood, so people can be moved early.
